I am so thrilled to announce the Rancho Verde chapter of SkillsUSA just attended
the 46th Annual SkillsUSA State Conference this past weekend and the following took place:
JOSEPH SAENZ, 11, won a GOLD MEDAL in the Computer Maintenance Technology contest. He will be representing RVHS and the State of California at the National Conference in Kansas City, MO, in June! He had to take the extensive COMP TIA A+ exam (an industry certificate exam) as well as physically demonstrate his skills in all things computer repair-related to tech industry judges.
JACQUAEN CUNNINGHAM, 12, won a BRONZE MEDAL in the Firefighting contest. While only gold medalists advance to nationals, he showed a superb performance, especially considering that most of his opponents are enrolled at fire academies in their respective school districts. Jacquaen was required to complete the CPAT (the actual physical test given to firefighters), as well as complete in-depth interviews and oral examination by industry experts. His determination, along with the support of the local fire station, helped him prepare for, and win, this contest!
While our other two competitors, Maria D. Rodriguez (12) and Clifton Rawlings (12), did not medal, they should still be commended for their outstanding efforts in their respective contests. There were over 1,800 student competitors in nearly 90 leadership and technical skill events. Many of the schools we competed against have SkillsUSA chapters that are 20-40 years old; also many are academies or science and tech schools. We would love to grow our CTE programs here at Rancho to offer more opportunities for our own students to experience those ever-so-important technical, hands-on skills. SkillsUSA makes this happen. Countless students from across the state not only took home medals, but cash, scholarships, and prizes.
Another opportunity our chapter took advantage of was to have 4 of our students work as “Courtesy Corps” members at the conference. Alexis Cervantes (9), Rodrigo Cobarruvias (9), Max Zelaya (10), and Jason Montoya (12) were able to attend the conference as “employees,” taking directions from the conference coordinators. In return, their hotel rooms were comped. This invaluable experience is something SkillsUSA offers at every state and national conference.
Please take a look at some of the photos from our trip (link below). It was truly an amazing experience for all of the students (and staff) who participated in the conference. I look forward to many more. Thank you for any support you’ve given us. If you see these students, please offer your congratulations to them.
